The remains of the trawler are still visible today and we have caught a many a blue fish around it over the years.
On this day in 1982- Trawler runs aground and sinks at Inlet The 89 ft trawler, Lois Joyce captained by fisherman Walter Tate, ran aground at Oregon Inlet. The experienced waterman kept the propellers running in order to dig a hole under the boat to keep it from overturning. Two coastguardsmen wearing survival suits approached the Lois Joyce in a rubber rescue raft to adhere a towline, but the raft overturned. They were rescued about an hour later. Six crewmen from the Lois Joyce were airlifted to safety. The trawler sank carrying 3000 lbs of flounder and was quickly enveloped by the inlet's shifting sands.
